Cross-stitch fabric size calculator

Enter your chart's stitch count to see the finished design size and how much Aida, evenweave or linen to cut, for every common fabric count.

Margin on each side
3 in (7.5 cm) is usual for framing. Use less for hoops or ornaments.

How it works

Fabric count is how many stitches fit in one inch. On Aida you stitch over one square, so 14-count Aida gives 14 stitches per inch. On evenweave and linen you usually stitch over two threads, which halves the count: 28-count evenweave over two also gives 14 stitches per inch.

design size = stitches ÷ (fabric count ÷ threads stitched over)
fabric to cut = design size + 2 × margin
Example: 140 stitches on 14-count Aida = 10 in, plus 3 in each side = 16 in

Choosing a margin

  • Framing: 3 in (7.5 cm) or more on every side leaves room for the mount and for lacing or taping the fabric.
  • Hoop display: 2 in (5 cm) plus the depth of the hoop is usually enough.
  • Small finishes such as ornaments, cards and patches need only about 1 in (2.5 cm).
  • Working in a hoop or on scroll bars? Make sure the fabric is big enough to fit them comfortably.

Same chart, different fabric

A higher count makes a smaller, finer design from the same chart, and a lower count makes a bigger one with easier-to-see holes. The table in the results compares every common fabric so you can pick the size you want before you buy.
